I am unbelievably excited to announce that I have been signed on by Westminster John Knox Press (WJK) to publish my first book!!
This is Bucket-List stuff, people! I can hardly believe it.
Remember back in January when I went to Phoenix for the Christianity 21 conference and I gave this short 7-minute talk? Afterwards I was approached by an Editor from WJK who gave me her card and said that if I was ever interested in talking about putting my story in to a book then to let her know.
Um… yes please.
Back in May I submitted an outline and proposal for the book. They liked the idea and wanted to see a sample chapter. After cranking one of those out and sending it in, they liked it enough to move me to the final round of decision making, and they wanted to see one more chapter.
So I churned out another chapter, sent it in, and waited.
My editor (um, yeah, how cool is it that I get to say THAT phrase?!) emailed me in early June to congratulate me that they would indeed like to move forward with my book!
So what is the book, you ask? Great question.
It is tentatively titled, UnClobber: A Journey to Align the Head and the Heart on Homosexuality in the Bible.
If you’ve been around my blog for a couple years then you might remember that I first started working on
this “UnClobber” idea over three years ago, shortly after getting fired the first time around. It was my beginning efforts to flesh out how I approached the Bible when it comes to homosexuality, what are known as the Clobber Passages.
Then two years ago I put on an all-day teaching seminar where we recorded video lectures of me unclobbering Leviticus, Romans, and 1 Corinthians/1 Timothy.
The book, then, will weave my story of getting fired by two churches in two years with chapters on the clobber passages, where I’ll revisit the Bible’s view on homosexuality.
I am so. Frickin. Excited.
The plan is for it to be in the Fall 2016 lineup for WJK.
Today, I’m also unveiling a brand new website I’ve been slowly putting together over the past year and a half.
This is the home for all my UnClobber material.
On this site you can view the UnClobber videos, sign up for updates about the book, as well as work with me to curate your own UnClobber Event. This could be as simple as me coming to guest speak at your church, or we could put on an evening lecture, or heck, even do another full-day teaching seminar!
I’d love for you to stop by and share it.
UnClobber on Facebook
Finally, UnClobber is on Facebook. So, you know, do that thing where you go click “Like.”
And then share.
A huge word of thanks to my family and friends who have encouraged me these past few years to finally write a book. You know who you are, and you know how much I love you.
I truly hope that my story and my critical-and-compassionate look in to the Clobber Passages will be an inspiring and encouraging resource for the church in the 21st Century.
Now… how to write another 50,000 words…
